Art Projects
Generally speaking, below is a snapshot of what the students will be doing for the year.
SIXTH GRADE: Classes meet for 9 weeks
Color-filled Houses-
Students will design a three dimensional house, from paper, using only primary colors on one side and secondary colors on the others.
The purpose of this assignment is to teach color theory.
The Elements of Art Form -
Students will create a diamond form, placing an Element of Art on each facet.
The purpose of this lesson is to offer a concrete application of the Elements of Art.
SEVENTH GRADE: Classes meet for 9 weeks
Ceramic Houses-
Students will create a house using clay and mixed media. These houses will become their neighborhoods. Students will need to communicate with one another to discuss the “flavor” of their neighborhood and the purpose of it's creation.
The goal of this task is to expand upon students three dimensional capabilities and to encourage positive group interactions.
Group Project: Flat People - Students will work in “table” groups to create sections of a person using 12x9inch pieces of cardboard and mixed media. Students will need to determine what type of person they are assembling. This is similar to a “Flat Stanley”, but in larger personalized sections.
Students will be learning the application of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
EIGHTH GRADE: Classes meet for 12 weeks
The House I Built!-
Students will have the opportunity to construct the front and side of their desired house, (showing inside and outside), from a variety of materials. Students will write a rationale concerning the layout, inhabitants and neighborhood.
The purpose for this assignment is to encourage students to apply their past knowledge of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, three dimensionally.
Free Art Fridays- Students will create a character using recycled materials and produce a short story. Students will leave their work of art in a prominent place in the community with an identification tag, (my district email address). Students will take a photograph of the “instillation”. Hopefully, students will be contacted, via my email giving the opportunity for verification of the importance of the art piece.
The purpose of this task is to challenge students abilities to create on a variety of surfaces and incorporate mixed media.
Asian Studies: A Study of Family Honor-
Students will select a family member to honor by creating a portrait with background and specialized frame, using mixed media materials. Students will write a tribute to their family member.
The purpose of this task is to give students the opportunity to produce a likeness of a family member using oil pastels, (focusing on shading and blending techniques). The background will be painted and other materials will be incorporated.
